Stockport Credit Union welcomes new CEO Sheila Murtagh

In December 2022, Stockport Credit Union warmly welcomed their new CEO Shelia Murtagh to the community-based credit union.

Murtagh, who succeeded Jonathan Moore, lives in Stockport and is passionate about supporting local people.

“I moved to Stockport in 1997, brought up my three children here and think it’s a great place to live. I’m delighted to have the opportunity to join the Stockport Credit Union team.

“My role as CEO is to lead the staff team and work with the Board, other volunteers, members, and supporters to keep developing the credit union so we can help even more people benefit from our services.

“Credit Unions are different because we put members’ needs first. We are for people, not for profit. Our aim is to improve our current members, and new ones, financial wellbeing by providing ethical, affordable services and loans.”

Sheila’s new role at Stockport Credit Union has come at a crucial time – as the cost-of-living crisis is having a dramatic effect on people’s livelihoods across the nation.

With over 10 years of experience as CEO at Salford Credit Union, Sheila is looking forward to working with the Stockport Credit Union team to create a credit union which is trusted by local people.

Sheila explains “The cost-of-living crisis means that even more people are struggling, even if they’ve been able to cope before. Credit Unions offer ethical loans to help local people in the community – whether that be saving for family holidays, new school uniforms, white goods or even Christmas 2023!

“Over the coming months I aim to use my knowledge, experience and networks help increase membership and build financial resilience in Stockport.”
